"I am not a Virginian, but an American."
Patrick Henry, Speech to the First Continental Congress
(1774)
Patrick Henry might have said that he was not a Virginian in
an attempt to promote a spirit of unity in the Continental Congress,
but I'm sure his genealogist descendants would argue the point.
Many researchers who have Colonial ancestry have some family in
the important state of Virginia...and those folks will be delighted
with the Virginia Vital Records CD.
This new resource contains images of the actual pages of six
books published by Genealogical Publishing Company: Virginia
Vital Records, Virginia Marriage Records, Virginia
Will Records, Virginia Land Records, Virginia Military
Records, and Virginia Tax Records. The books contain
articles originally published in The Virginia Magazine of History
and Biography, The William and Mary College Quarterly,
and Tyler's Quarterly.
More than 138,000 individuals are referenced, and the types
of material you'll find varies greatly:
- Virginia Vital Records contains lists of births,
deaths, and marriages.
- Virginia Marriage Records includes items found
in ministers' returns and records, licenses, registers, bonds,
and newspapers.
- Virginia Will Records contains information from
wills, inventories, administrative accounts, court minutes,
deeds, and other types of estate records.
- Virginia Land Records includes a number of items
relating to the ownership and transfer of land.
- Virginia Military Records includes information
from (primarily) colonial and Revolutionary War records, including
militia lists, pension records, service records, pay rolls,
and other records.
- Virginia Tax Records contains information from
documents such as property tax lists, tithables, rent rolls,
and other records.
